Wiid Design is a Cape Town based design studio, established by Laurie Wiid van Heerden. Wiid explores the notion of luxury, in it’s past and future terms, here in South Africa where the first and third worlds collide.
“I don’t just pay attention to detail; I’m obsessed by it, both in my own work and the world around me. All my pieces incorporate handmade elements, pieces that are part of the production which I oversee personally, this is very important to me and I believe it brings out the value of my pieces, similar to investing in a piece of art. Wiid design creates pieces/products that can be seen as the interface between art and design - where materials are transformed into life enriching and durable products.”
Wiid Design’s work comes from a conceptual and artistic environment, a angle on various topics of contemporary culture, with a focus on traditional handcrafting in combination with avant-garde techniques.Skillfully combining traditional handcrafting and avant-garde techniques, Wiidtransforms materials into life-enriching and durable objetd’art.
Being nominated as a finalist in the Absolut Visi Designer of the year competition in the emerging designer category for 2011 and having exhibited at international design fairs such as 100% Design in London, Design Days Dubai, Design Miami/Basel in Switzerland and Design Miami in the US just shows the quality of work and attention to detail that Wiid Design presents in its work.
Laurie Wiid van Heerden received the “maker to market” award at the annual Southern Guild Design Foundation awards ceremony in 2013. This award recognizes a design company that understands the value of packaging, for presentation and protection, identity and brand building, logistics and the various processes that take place between production and sales.
