Meraki Daybed

Designed for the American Hardwood Council as part of the Seed to Seat project: www.seedtoseat.info

The Meraki Daybed, made using cork and American soft maple, is the result of a decision to create African furniture in combination with more modern geometric shapes. The shape and concept for the headrest derived from research based on the Senufo people of West Africa. The carving is a focal point, which emphasizes the importance of the handmade aesthetic, as opposed to only machine manufacturing. Cork is also used as an alternative to upholstery, where the emphasis is based on sustainability in combination with an unconventional material.

Materials:

Manufactured from Soft Maple and natural cork.

Dimensions:

2800mm L x 410mm H x 575mm W

Lineage Cabinet

Lineage, meaning lineal decent from ancestor, ancestry or pedigree… is a large cork and steel cabinet weighing close to 600kg and dissects into three parts for easy installation. The one-off collectable piece finds its harmony in a historical narrative, whereby gables reference from Cape Dutch architecture, while the Cape Malay women painted on the aluminum doors speak of the Western Cape’s rich cultural heritage.

In Europe, they are heirloom pieces that can be viewed in museums; this cabinet represents that idea to create one such collectible piece fashioned in a way that it would present itself as an artwork in a grand entrance hall.

Materials:

Internal aluminum cabinet structure, with 6mm aluminum shelves, 4mm toughened black glass backing. 16mm Mild steel internal rib structure for strength and weight in the base. Solid machined 100% organic and sustainable dark cork, including hand-carved composite cork inlays and details. Hand-painted 6mm aluminum doors by Lionel Smit with custom machined aluminum hinges. The doors are sealed with a matte 2K automotive lacquer. The cabinet components are assembled with stainless steel and blackened mild steel fittings.

Residues Bench

"The process started with Laurie who fabricated the 3m electro-galvanised steel bench top that was then transported to the artist. The colours and artwork were discussed, primer was applied and the much-anticipated transformation began... Once completed, the artwork was collected and covered with an automotive clear-coat lacquer. This was then finished and fitted with buffed stainless-steel fittings and rubber feet in Wiid's Woodstock Studio where the striking collaboration was finally unveiled."

Untitled (after W.B)

This piece is based on the techniques I learnt through working for the artist Wim Botha. This is the first bench I have manufactured, where I focused on creating a product that presents the love I have for his work and also the passion I have for working with timber. I've had the privilege of assisting Wim during the past 3 and a half years and I'm inspired by him and his body of work. The construction techniques employed in the creation of this bench have been developed and tailored over years, I wanted to represent this within this particular piece.

Each timber component is hand machined and fitted with careful consideration to present the "energy" or "movement" of the piece. The main source starts with intricate timber joints which creates a cluster of sharp bevelled angles. This cluster or source (origin), starts to breakdown into lines and facets, spreading through the length of the bench.

Meeting the end of the piece, the angles are aligned and placed accordingly to form a controlled point, bringing the piece to completion.

The bench is fabricated from a 3m long, 5mm thick electo-galvanised mild steel top, 4.5mm stainless steel legs with a durable ferro-grade black powder coat, custom black patina stainless steel fittings, with in-house manufactured custom cladded timber elements and finally finished in a durable satin clear lacquer.
