Spektrum Furniture Collection
Spektrum is a collection of furniture and objects fabricated from unique laminated glass and painted cork. The products are experimental pieces whereby my studio played with various paint techniques and pigments to emphasise the unique textures of cork in combination with the smooth/contemporary surface of glass.
The cork, therefore, evolves into a “new material” whereby the textures and details are highlighted by layers of special pigmented paint.
The glass contains a unique laminated film that creates a multicoloured surface whereby the blending of colours and reflection of light changes at various angles when viewed.
Laminated glass, cork, acrylic paint, mild steel and stainless steel.

Untitled (after W.B.)
This piece is based on the techniques I learned through working for the artist Wim Botha. This is the first bench I have manufactured, where I focused on creating a product that presents the love I have for his work and also the passion I have for working with timber.
I had the privilege of assisting Wim for 3 and a half years and I’m inspired by him and his body of work. The construction techniques employed in the creation of this bench have been developed and tailored over years, I wanted to represent this within this particular piece.
Each timber component is hand machined and fitted with careful consideration to present the “energy” or “movement” of the piece. The main source starts with intricate timber joints which creates a cluster of sharp beveled angles. This cluster or source (origin), starts to break down into lines and facets, spreading through the length of the bench.
Meeting the end of the piece, the angles are aligned and placed accordingly to form a controlled point, bringing the piece to completion.
The bench is fabricated from a 3m long, 5mm thick electo-galvanised mild steel top, 4.5mm stainless steel legs with a durable ferrograin black powder coat, custom black patina stainless steel fittings, with in-house manufactured custom-cladded timber elements, and finally finished in a durable satin clear lacquer.
This bench is a one-off.

Neural Pathway (Wooden Cuboid 019) Black and Natural
A collaboration with artist Driaan Claassen
With a friendship that stretches almost a decade, Driaan and Laurie have had a deep respect for each other’s different styles and aesthetics. A conversation developed over that time, always looking to bridge the two worlds into a piece of art balancing sculpture and design.
Through this collaboration Driaan and Laurie developed two benches that seems to mirror and simultaneously contrast each other in a continued conversation.
Manufactured in Cape Town from Nordic Pine and Stainless steel.
Black: Sealed, lacquered black and coated stainless steel
Natural: Sealed, natural nude finish and electro polished stainless steel

Lineage Cabinet
A collaboration with artist Lionel Smit
Lineage, meaning lineal descent from ancestor, ancestry, or pedigree… is a large cork and steel cabinet weighing close to 600kg and dissects into three parts for easy installation.
The one-off collectible piece finds its harmony in a historical narrative, referencing the Cape Dutch gable architecture, while the Cape Malay women painted on the aluminium doors speak of the Western Cape’s rich cultural heritage.
In Europe, they are heirloom pieces that can be viewed in museums; this cabinet represents that idea to create one such collectible piece fashioned in a way that it would present itself as an artwork in a grand entrance hall.
An internal aluminium cabinet structure, with 6mm aluminium shelves, 4mm toughened black glass backing. 16mm Mild steel internal rib structure for strength and weight in the base. Solid machined 100% organic and sustainable dark cork, including hand-carved composite cork inlays and details. Hand-painted 6mm aluminium doors by Lionel Smit with custom machined aluminium hinges.
The doors are sealed with a matte 2K automotive lacquer. The cabinet components are assembled with stainless steel and blackened mild steel fittings.
